Last week’s record setting temperatures had noticeable impacts upon the power grids across the nation as air conditioners were working overtime to try and combat heat figures that were comfortably over 100 in many parts of the country, to include New York City. This past Friday, July 22, with temperatures as high as 102 degrees in the city, the NYISO power grid consumed more megawatts then ever before in history, breaking the previous record which occurred in 2006. The potential for brown outs and other strains imparted on the power grid led the call for demand response initiatives, both from NYISO and the local utility Con Edison, to spring into effect to help maintain the huge surges in demand.
