The “Energy Committee” of the New York Building Congress recently published a must read report entitled “Electricity Outlook; Powering New York City Through 2030.” The reports’ analysis points to risk factors in forecasts made by New York’s electric power grid operator New York Independent System Operator commonly known as NYISO.

The greatest risk to NYISO’s forecast is the assumption that relicensing of Indian Point nuclear power plant (located above New York City in Westchester County) will occur.  Indian Point has licensing renewal deadlines of midnight September 28, 2013 (Unit II) and midnight December 12, 2015 (Unit III).  The licensing renewal of Indian Point has become a political hot button issue with the Governor of NY State squarely on the side of closing this generating facility.  Indian Point has long been a mainstay of the NY City regional electricity generation portfolio.

We at NuEnergen are currently watching the licensing renewal process unfold very carefully and will keep you informed as we believe this is the greatest risk factor facing rate payers in the New York City and Hudson Valley Regions.
